contents Selecting Library Materials for Resident Libraries in State Institutions. Revised Edition. Crosby, Barbara S. Adult Learning Institutional Libraries Library Acquisition Library Material Selection Policy Formation Reference Materials Remedial Reading Shared Library Resources State Programs User Needs (Information) This guide for selecting library materials for residents of state institutions is designed to help the institutional librarian who has special groups to serve and who does not have access to standard acquisition tools. The first section lists what information is necessary to order materials, provides samples of filled-in order forms, and mentions several acquisition tools. The second section suggests bibliographies to use when creating a core collection of materials for reluctant or poor adult and adolescent readers, the mentally handicapped, and general prison and hospital populations. The third section recommends a source of reviews of library materials. Publisher names and addresses of print and non-print materials are included in the fourth section, and reasons to refuse gifts offered to libraries are discussed in the fifth. Resources available to institutional librarians in Texas comprise the sixth section, featuring names, addresses, and hours of service of 29 libraries in the state. The seventh section instructs librarians on how to construct a materials selection policy. (SD)
