Administrative Organization Alumni Associations Distance Education Foreign Countries Higher Education History Institutional Characteristics Organizational Development Student Organizations This paper provides a brief history of the Maryborough and District University Society of the University of Queensland, Australia. Highlights of the review include: (1) the establishment of the first distance education, or external studies, centers at Townsville, Rockhampton, and Ipswich in 1949; (2) a resolution taken in 1963 to form a University Society of Maryborough and that its primary aim be the furtherance of tertiary education; (3) membership of the Society in 1964 of 55 graduates and one student; (4) the granting of full voting rights and access to the Executive Committee to students in 1968; (5) substantial upgrading of the center from 1971-1980 through consolidation of the Society and the Students' Association, a move to a larger building, the allocation of additional funds for instructional materials, and increasing use of the center facilities by external students; and (6) the current membership of 65-75 members. Appendices contain a list of former and current office holders, part-time officers, and positions of honor; the constitution of the Maryborough and District University Society; and selected statistics (chiefly library) for 1964-1982.
