The present study was limited to 14 Illinois academic institutions whose curriculum centers were surveyed to determine whether their institutional role was to serve as media holding centers or whether they constituted a major form of support for the education program. Their role was defined through the comprehensiveness of their collection composition, reference services, bibliographic instruction, and staffing. The survey results indicate the following: curriculum materials circulation has increased since the 1980s; online circulation systems have largely replaced the manual systems; collection development policies exist in all of the curriculum centers; 64% of the libraries now employ their technical services division to catalog materials by the Dewey or Library of Congress classification systems; most curriculum materials are integrated into the library's online catalog and circulation system; and many institutions indicate a willingness to dedicate resources and staff to aid in the processing and availability of materials. Based on an examination of the types of services offered by the curriculum centers, it is concluded that the institutions are providing a wide range of services to education faculty and staff.
