Ancient History Architecture Area Studies Building Design Facility Planning Greek Civilization Library Collections Library Development Public Libraries The first universal library in history, the Alexandrian Library, was established in the fourth century B.C. in Greece and disappeared in the third and fourth centuries A.D., according to various accounts. In an attempt to preserve Egypt's historical heritage, the Egyptian government has decided to build a new library in its place--the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The new Alexandrian library will be a public research library whose purpose and collection will be designed to enrich the cultural development and heritage of Egypt, the Mediterranean region, Africa, and the Arab world. It will provide a link to the world's major research libraries utilizing all modern forms of technology for the acquisition, storage, transfer, and dissemination of information. The library is scheduled to open in 1995. This report presents the history of the ancient Alexandrian library, accounts of the Alexandrian librarians, the library collection (which represented writings from a variety of civilizations), and theories about the library's demise. Descriptions of the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina's mission statement, its proposed site (Alexandria, Egypt), organizational structures and functions, collection subject orientation, automation details, and its International School of Information Studies (ISIS) are presented. Details of the international architecture competition, which determined the winning architectural design of the new library, include a description of the competition's theme, a list of the judges, and the cost estimates of the project.
