Community Involvement Library Collections Library Personnel Library Planning Library Services Organizational Objectives Outreach Programs Publicity Religious Libraries User Needs (Information) This second revised edition of a guide to promoting and attracting users to a church library retains most of the material of the previous edition, adds new material, and updates the references. Guidelines are presented in six chapters: (1) "Promoting Library Use" (stages of promotion, ways of attracting the attention and interest of prospective users, and how to involve members of the congregation in library activities); (2) "Publicizing the Library" (suggestions for ways to "sell" the library to potential users, such as informing the church community of what the library has and what it can do for them, with emphasis on special services, milestones, and future plans); (3) "Reaching People and Programs" (the roles of the clergyman, the librarian, and the library staff, and various activities for users such as book reviews, discussions, and clubs); (4) "Sponsoring Special Events" (various activities that the library can sponsor to publicize its services, create good will, and even earn money for books and supplies, including open houses, tours, teas, story hours, book fairs, library week contests, programs and meetings, and fund-raising endeavors); (5) "Creating and Reporting News" (the kinds of events that make news and how to announce such events in the parish and/or local newspapers); and (6) "Posters, Bulletin Boards, and Displays," (detailed guidelines for planning, designing, and arranging visual publicity materials). Each chapter includes a list of references, and a resource guide lists readings on background; book reviewing; posters, bulletin boards and displays; and storytelling. Also listed are relevant periodicals and sources for library materials. An index concludes the guide. (BBM) |
