Childrens Libraries Disabilities Elementary School Students Elementary Secondary Education Guidelines Handicrafts High School Students Library Materials Library Services Program Evaluation Public Libraries Public Relations Questionnaires Reading Programs Summer Programs Young Children This manual provides guidelines and materials for librarians planning a summer reading program for children in North Carolina on the theme of outer space. An evaluation form to be returned to the State Library of North Carolina at the end of the summer is included. The introduction includes discussions of summer reading materials and programs; patterns (clip art) for a small poster and a reading record insert; suggestions for involving groups of children and providing library services to visually or physically impaired children; and a description of the Morehead Planetarium. The remaining eight sections focus on: (1) Sources and Resources (raising money, resources for programs, support from local newspapers, Morehead Planetarium Gift Shop, sources for inexpensive toys/prizes, places to visit, and a planetarium guide); (2) Public Relations (press release guidelines, PSAs (public service announcements), a letter from the State Superintendent, decorations and bulletin boards, displays, nametags, clip art, borders, and promotionals); (3) Programs for Toddlers and Preschoolers, School Age, and All Ages (suggestions for books, films, flannelboard stories, fingerplays, activities; instructions and/or patterns for crafts; and scripts for presenting stories); (4) Crafts and Activities (suggestions for food, crafts, science activities, puppet shows, and games and contests); (5) Activity Sheets (for younger and older children with answer sheets for puzzles); (6) Bibliographies (picture books and easy readers, children's science fiction books, children's nonfiction books, free and inexpensive materials, and a basic astronomy library); (7) Films and Videos; and (8) Reading Aloud (parental involvement, parents and children reading together).
