The paper analyzes and reviews the developments that occurred from April 1974 to February 1975 and examines the issues that were raised. A description of the people and the social and economic environment of this Appalachian county provides background information to the chain of events which surrounded the textbook controversy. It is observed that the protest movement resulted from a conflict between dominant and suppressed cultures as well as from differences in perceptions. (16 references) (MAB)
