It is intended to give evidence of the importance of the Title II-C Program to libraries' efforts toward developing, preserving, and sharing their resources with the nation's scholars. The study consists of two components. Part 1 is a series of brief profiles presenting data pertaining to program funding by Congress, i.e., the number and size of grants awarded; the nature of institutions receiving Title II-C funding; the distribution of projects among the program's three primary funding priorities; and the geographical distribution of the 360 grants awarded between 1978 and 1989. Part 2 consists of 22 representative case studies, 11 of which illustrate the scope of project activity within the three program priorities--bibliographic access, preservation, and collection development. The remaining case studies describe the cumulative contributions of Title II-C funded projects to a single academic discipline: music. Two appendices describe the award process and highlight several issues and questions that merit additional consideration. The report concludes with a glossary of library and information science acronyms. (MAB) |
