  • Library Development, Resource Sharing, and Networking among Higher Education Institutions in Papua New Guinea. Preliminary Report and Recommendations. Lee, Hwa-Wei Academic Libraries Consultants Databases Developing Nations Foreign Countries Higher Education Interviews Library Automation Library Development Library Networks Library Services Policy Formation Research Libraries Shared Library Resources This report presents recommendations for the upgrading of higher education information resources in Papua New Guinea (PNG) according to acceptable norms, effective sharing of resources through phased introduction of automation and networking, and the creation of a database of information resources. The report was based on a survey of 41 PNG libraries of various types; it identifies both the strengths and weaknesses in information resources and proposes a strategy for building centers of excellence as possible nodes for automation and networking. It is noted that, in view of the difficult economic and financial situations that PNG is facing, the task of building adequate library and information resources to meet the needs of education, research, and services is monumental. To meet the challenges, the report presents a set of recommendations for policy considerations and for necessary implementation plans and actions. The justifications for these recommendations are also given in the report. The following items are appended: the names of individuals who were consulted or interviewed; a copy of the National Library Service of PNG's "Basic Standards for College Libraries"; and lists of library and information resources in the six major libraries, in the Teachers College libraries, and in other college libraries.
