The papers presented have the following titles and authors: (1) "Training for Planning and Management: Improved Management Systems in Higher Education in Developing Countries" (Kevin M. Lillis); (2) "Libraries and Books Development" (Carol Priestley); (3) "Information Networks and Training" (Information from the International Development Research Centre); (4) "Post-secondary Education in the Small States of the Commonwealth" (Steve Packer); and (5) "Staff Development: International Development Program of Australian Universities and Colleges (IDP) and the South Pacific" (Ken Back). Collectively the papers address the issues associated with improving the management of systems and institutions of higher education in developing countries, particularly in Commonwealth Africa; highlight some critical issues for library and book development; discuss the key issues and problems in supporting and operating information systems in developing countries; and examine post-secondary education in the small states of the Commonwealth, the critical issues involved, and the directions and potential for cooperation in the next decade. The Annex includes a list of the Commonwealth Independent countries with populations under 2 million. Contains 13 references. (GLR) |
