Other objectives were to relieve the burden of parents who were unable to help their children with homework and to improve communication between parent, teacher, and child. Homework assignments were made daily by the teacher. Children were given 30 minutes every school day to complete their homework. They were able to seek the aid of the teacher, use the library, and work in cooperative groups in order to complete the task. Children were tested weekly to determine whether homework completion had led to basic skills improvement. Parents received information about test scores every 2 weeks. Results of the practicum were positive. Homework productivity increased sharply, and weekly testing showed increased knowledge in the areas reinforced by homework completion. Unexpected outcomes revealed the development of self-esteem, and mutual admiration and respect. On-site homework completion gave children time to engage in more leisure time reading. Parents were happy with positive feedback regarding homework completion, and children received positive and meaningful communication from parents. It is recommended that educators examine new approaches to the problems related to traditional homework assignments. A list of 13 references and related materials is appended. (GLR) |
