contents The Library of Teaching Improvement Packets (TIPS) for Preparing Personal Teaching Improvement Guides: 24 Item Edition. Davis, Barbara And Others Assignments Classroom Techniques College Faculty Guidelines Helping Relationship Higher Education Instructional Improvement Questionnaires Staff Development Student Attitudes Student Evaluation of Teacher Performance Student Motivation Teacher Improvement Teaching Methods This document presents a collection of specific ideas addressing 24 teaching practices appropriate for developing Personal Teaching Improvement Guides, an individualized approach to improving teaching in colleges and universities. The ideas came from teachers at the University of California (Berkeley) whose teaching was highly rated by students. The Personal Teaching Improvement Guides are compiled to reflect those specific areas in which student ratings indicate a teacher is weak. Specific teaching practices covered include: discussing points of view other than your own; discussing recent developments in the field; emphasizing conceptual understanding; explaining clearly; being well prepared; giving lectures that are easy to outline; summarizing major points; stating objectives for each class session; identifying what you consider important; encouraging class discussion; inviting students to share their knowledge and experiences; knowing if the class is understanding you or not; having students apply concepts to demonstrate understanding; showing genuine interest in students; giving personal help to students having difficulties; relating to students as individuals; being accessible to students out of class; and keeping students informed of their progress.
