During the period July 1, 1972 through February 28, 1973, the project was funded (for half the requested amount), and major objectives began to be achieved. Projects carried out by the assistance center included the following: (1) the Community School Project, which used public school facilities and leadership to serve the educational community and which included homebound instruction, adult learning centers, an educational needs survey, and assistance to the elderly; (2) the provision of whole-family intervention in rural Appalachia, emphasizing adult basic education, early childhood education, and services for the aging; (3) development of career education facilities, an adult basic education learning center, an area vocational school, a technical institute, and a two-year community college at Morehead State University (Kentucky); (4) the development and demonstration of rural learning centers; (5) development of libraries in rural and urban centers; and (6) use of rural radio and cable television for education. (The report lists 38 articles or reports about the project and provides a detailed list of project publicity and dissemination activities.) (KC)
