| contents | Access Services: Organization and Management. SPEC Kit #179. Steel, Virginia, Comp. Academic Libraries Administrative Organization Foreign Countries Higher Education Interlibrary Loans Library Administration Library Circulation Library Personnel Library Surveys Mission Statements Models Occupational Information Research Libraries This Systems and Exchange Center (SPEC) kit begins with a summary by Virginia Steel of the findings of a survey of Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries that was conducted in 1991 to determine the prevalence of the organizational model of access services--i.e., a department or division responsible for the services and operations that allow physical access to library collections--among academic and research libraries, and to discover how the model has been and continues to be adapted to fit the needs of the larger organization. It is noted that, of the 76 libraries which responded to the survey, about half reported having such a department. Topics covered in the summary include the reporting structure, access/circulation services functions, staffing, budgetary responsibilities, and issues and trends. A copy of the questionnaire with a tally of the responses, a list of the respondents to the survey, and a list of libraries not having an access services department are also provided. The remainder--and largest part--of the kit is made up of materials submitted by survey respondents. These include organization charts from 22 libraries; position descriptions from 13 libraries; and mission and goals statements from six libraries. A list of six selected readings completes the kit.
