- S. R. Ranganathan's Theory of Reference Service. Varghese, Manoj M. Classification Foreign Countries Information Retrieval Library Research Library Science Online Systems Reference Services Users (Information) A study of S. R. Ranganathan's theory of reference service is undertaken by using an historical methodology. It was evident from the literature review that Ranganathan had established that reference service was the most important work and served as the hub of all library practices. There were six factors that were repeatedly considered by Ranganathan to form the theoretical base upon which the practical reference service was built: (1) Ranganathan's colon classification system; (2) classified catalog; (3) the five laws of library science; (4) Ranganathan's own experience with actual reference work; (5) Ranganathan's references to Indian classical literature; and (6) the principle of humanistic reference service. The study also evaluated the effectiveness of Ranganathan's theories and concepts of reference service in the context of mechanized retrieval of information. Among the factors, Ranganathan emphasized the use of the colon classification scheme as an effective tool for reference service. This classification scheme is based in the way the mind of the patron perceives and expresses his need for information. The classification scheme presents the structure of subjects in the recorded document and its relationships among other categories of subjects. The tool will also aid in determining the precise needs of the patron or the subjects of documents. Definitions of terms and phrases are appended. (Contains 21 references.) (Author/ALF)
