DuPree, Vi Access to Information Books Censorship Elementary Secondary Education Learning Resources Centers Library Circulation Library Material Selection Library Policy Library Research Library Surveys Media Specialists Questionnaires School Libraries This study sought to determine the extent of restrictive access to books in Georgia school library media centers and to discover by whose authority and for what reason these books might be placed on restrictive shelves. Questionnaires were completed and received from a stratified random sampling of 119 media specialists in high schools, middle or junior high schools, and elementary schools. The questionnaire inquired which titles were restricted, who authorized the restriction, reasons for restrictions, and what criteria were necessary for students to check out these titles. The study found that 29 percent of the survey participants had books in their school library media centers with restrictive access. The main restrictors of these books were library media specialists. Most titles were restricted because of explicit illustrations in books with sexual content. Parental permission was the main prerequisite for checking out the majority of these titles. There was no significant relationship between the grade and/or size of school and restrictive access to books. Appendixes include the Library Bill of Rights, a list of 99 titles challenged or banned in 1989-90, the survey questionnaire and cover letters, and a 29-item list of the restrictive titles from the survey.
