Communications Educational Technology High Schools Information Storage Information Technology Learning Resources Centers Library Automation Library Surveys Media Specialists Private Schools Public Schools Questionnaires School Libraries This descriptive study, using a questionnaire survey, determined how computer-based technology was being selected, funded, and utilized in high school library media centers and assessed its impact on library media program. A total of 132 questionnaires were sent (of which 107 questionnaires--81 percent--were completed and returned) to randomly sampled public and private Georgia high school library media specialists. The study found that curriculum needs and technology plans were the main factors in selecting new technology. Technology purchases were funded primarily from local and state funds. The most utilized technologies in schools were telephones, cable television, and computers with CD-ROM drives. Computer-based technology had the greatest impact on the high school media program by providing increased access to more information, increased range of services, and a perceived change in the role of the media specialist.
