User-friendly, job-based software to strengthen reading, writing, mathematics, spelling, and grammar skills, as well as video and audio materials were available, The project, in coordination with the local Laubach Literacy Program, provided literacy students with a multifaceted basis for learning. Year 3 added family literacy; learning center users would bring literacy home to their families by checking out books to read aloud to children and taking free packets outlining ways to interest children in reading. Software problems and a late start in establishing the centers made evaluation of their direct impact on adult learners impossible, but the project had a great impact on the perception of the public library as an educational resource in the community. Attachments to the project report include handouts about automation of the library, a report on the Adult Literacy and Technology Conference held in St. Paul (Minnesota) on July 17-21 of 1990, "Hammond Workforce 2000: Literacy for Future Jobs. October 1990 to September 1991,""Hammond Workforce 2000: Bringing Literacy Home, October 1991 to September 1992," a description of the "Using Phonics in Context" tutorial program, and 10 data tables about program use. Program software, resources, and a high interest low vocabulary reading list are listed. (SLD) |
