- Library Development and Fundraising. SPEC Kit 193. Claassen, Lynda Corey, Comp. Academic Libraries Annual Reports Budgets Developmental Programs Fund Raising Futures (of Society) Higher Education Institutional Advancement Library Development Library Surveys Mail Surveys Marketing Occupational Information Research Libraries Resource Allocation This kit developed by the Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) presents results of a survey of development and fundraising activities in libraries that are members of ARL, as well as some sample documents used in connection with development and fundraising. Eighty-seven institutions responded, and their replies indicated that fundraising is a well-developed activity in many research libraries. Thirty-two percent of the respondents indicated involvement in a program in which the library development office works with a campus development office. A broad range of budgets is reported for funding library development, and a wide variety of library activities has been supported by fundraising efforts. Future concerns will include the relative importance of funds raised by the libraries and budgetary allocations from the institutions, as well as better identification of sources of funds, and staffing concerns. Sample documents include: (1) annual reports from two libraries; (2) campaign and fundraising project descriptions and documents from seven libraries; (3) documents relating to Friends of the Library from six libraries; (4) marketing information from two libraries; and (5) position descriptions from two libraries.
