contents Salary Setting Policies in ARL Libraries. SPEC Kit 177. Furuta, Kenneth, Comp. And Others Academic Libraries Collective Bargaining Equal Opportunities (Jobs) Financial Support Higher Education Librarians Library Planning Library Policy Library Surveys Policy Formation Promotion (Occupational) Research Libraries Salaries A survey was developed for the Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) to gather information on how Association of Research Libraries (ARL) academic libraries set salaries for new hires and how these libraries determine salary adjustments for professionals after employment. The survey was mailed to 103 ARL libraries, with 87 institutions responding. As with all university employees, the employment category determines the initial salary range and future increases. Twenty libraries classify librarians on the same basis as faculty, although the majority have a different pay scale. Just over half used a salary plan, and 17 have a collective bargaining agreement. Salaries were negotiated without any set plan, but with a concern for equity, by 52 responding institutions, but 37 used limits of a salary plan. The most important change librarians wanted to make was to obtain better funding, followed by tying the plan to performance and merit. Salary setting policies from the University of Alberta, Brown University, the University of Cincinnati, Kent State University, McMaster University, Queens University, and Temple University are presented. A flyer which summarizes the kit is also included. (Contains 6 references.) (SLD)
