  • Developing Learning Skills through Children's Literature: An Idea Book for K-5 Classrooms and Libraries. Laughlin, Mildred Knight Watt, Letty S. Authors Childrens Literature Class Activities Elementary Education Learning Strategies Literature Appreciation Teaching Methods Units of Study Designed to be planned jointly by teachers and school library media specialists, the 60 units of study described in this book suggest ideas for sharing literature that may be used in developing a scope and sequence of literature experiences for children in grades K-5. For primary grades K-2, the activities are primarily arranged through sharing the works of a particular author or illustrator. The activities for each grade level are organized in a similar pattern. Each individual unit in the book identifies behavioral objectives to be accomplished by using increasing difficult materials, suggests books to use with the unit, provides an introductory activity, and shares follow-up ideas. The units suggested in the book for third to fifth graders are developed around authors and illustrators, genres of literature, themes, and types of books found in the Dewey Decimal arrangement of the school media center. The suggested follow-up activities in the book do not exhaust the potential, but should inspire the addition of other ideas, so that all students can participate in an enjoyable experience relating to the concept introduced by the school library media specialists or teacher. The units in the book have been given appropriate specific grade designations for organizational purposes. Biographical sources for authors and illustrators, sources for book introduction techniques, and a directory of publishers and producers are attached. (RS)
