contents Quality Improvement Programs in ARL Libraries. SPEC Kit 196. Siggins, Jack, Comp. Sullivan, Maureen, Comp. Academic Libraries Higher Education Improvement Programs Institutional Characteristics Library Associations Library Development Library Services Library Surveys Program Implementation Quality Control Research Libraries Training In April 1993, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) conducted a survey of its members to update information gathered in 1991 about the existence of quality improvement programs and the use of quality improvement processes in research libraries. A total of 91 responses (76 percent) was received to the 13 questions of the survey. Fifteen (16 percent) of the respondents indicated that they currently have a formal quality improvement program in effect. Of the 76 libraries with no stated program, 18 are part of institutions that have programs in other departments. Ten of the 15 with programs are part of a larger improvement program within the institution. The improvement programs focus on a wide range of departments and functions and use a variety of improvement processes, suggesting that these libraries recognize the importance of emphasizing quality of service to library users in a number of ways. Attachments include documents related to the following topics: (1) university and library context (6 documents); (2) library programs (6 documents); and (3) training (6 documents). Flyer 196 is provided, which summarizes the Kit. (Contains 29 references.) (SLD)
