contents Literature-Based Art and Music: Children's Books and Activities To Enrich the K-5 Curriculum. Laughlin, Mildred Knight Street, Terri Parker Art Education Childrens Literature Curriculum Enrichment Elementary Education Interdisciplinary Approach Learning Activities Music Education Teaching Methods This document discusses using children's literature in the teaching of art and music. It is divided into two parts, the first of which deals with art programs, the second with music programs. Each part is divided into three chapters that are organized around an age or grade span. The grade divisions are: (1) kindergarten, transition, first grade; (2) second grade, third grade; and (3) fourth grade, fifth grade. The units provide suggested ideas for extending the art and music curricula beyond the scope and sequence that may have been developed in the local school district or at the state level. The concepts presented are basic and commonly are found in the scope and sequences of many curricula. The activities in many of the units are too long to be completed in one class period and may need to be adapted to the constraints of individual schedules. The units developed for each grade level are organized in a similar pattern. Each individual unit identifies objectives to be accomplished by using the trade books suggested. The objectives are written to be behavioral outcomes for students that teachers may use when preparing lesson plans. Knowledge and comprehension skills are basic for the objectives. Higher cognitive levels of appreciation, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation become more evident as progress through the grades is made. Each unit for both art and music includes a bibliography of recommended readings, provides a teacher or school library media specialist with an introductory activity, and suggests follow up activities for teachers and students to share.
