Using state funds, PennSERVE initiated a school service learning (SL) grant program and funded a total of 35 school and community-based SL programs between 1989 and 1991 in grades K-12, the Pennsylvania Service Corps, Pennsylvania Literacy Corps, Pennsylvania Conservation Corps, Library Corps, and Summer Youth Corps. In December 1993, focus groups consisting of 4-7 programs at 11 different grant sites across Pennsylvania were held to provide feedback and learning about PennSERVE-funded SL activities. According to the focus group participants, PennSERVE programs have had demonstrable positive impacts on students, SL coordinators, and the community. It was recommended that local programs teaching communities to solve local problems be encouraged, an SL support system be developed, and curriculum infusion be promoted.
