Established in 1992, the library is jointly maintained by the Ohio State University Sustainable Agriculture Program and the Ohio Department of Agriculture. The library's namesake, Louis Bromfield, was a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and noted conservationist and farmer. This research paper traces the development of the collection from its origins as a part of Bromfield's personal working library to its place in what at one time was to be the premier ecological information center in the world, and ultimately, to its current status as a closed-reference library for farmers, students, and other individuals interested in sustainable agriculture. Bromfield practiced what today is considered sustainable agriculture. Sustainable agriculture combines traditional conservation-minded farming techniques with modern technologies and includes such practices as rotating and diversifying crops, building up the soil, and when possible, controlling pests naturally. Economic, social, and environmental concerns have increased the need and demand for alternative methods of agriculture and consequently, the demand for information and education about the topic has increased. The Louis Bromfield Sustainable Agriculture now serves to meet this growing demand. (Contains 140 endnotes.) (Author) |
