The looseleaf notebook format allows the librarian or teacher to add material on related topics to make the resource more useful. The 53 lesson plans for the elementary grades (K-6) in this guide were contributed by librarians across the country. The introduction contains a discussion of critical thinking and the importance of library skills, as well as information on developing and using a library skills curriculum. Section 2 covers orientation of elementary-grade students to the library. Section 3 reviews using the catalog, whether card or automated. Section 4 is devoted to literature appreciation, with games and suggestions for involving students in literature. Section 5 introduces information books (nonfiction resources), while sections 6 and 7 discuss using different types of resources and research strategies, respectively. Section 8 contains a list of 60 professional resources. (SLD)
