contents De la lecture a l'ecriture, ou la reussite en francais ecrit des eleves de cinquieme secondaire et leurs habitudes de lecture (From Reading to Writing, or The Success in Written French of Fifth-Year Secondary School Students and Their Reading Habits). Gelinas, Rene Demography Foreign Countries French Grammar Learning Strategies Questionnaires Reading Attitudes Reading Habits Recreational Activities Secondary Education Secondary School Students Spelling Student Attitudes Student Educational Objectives Success Vocabulary Development Writing Skills A study investigated the relationship between reading habits and writing skills in French of 223 Canadian secondary school students. Students were surveyed concerning their demographic characteristics, attitudes about learning and reading, recreational activities, and reading habits and reading materials. Writing skills were evaluated using a standardized test. A variety of correlations were explored. Overall, results suggest that sociocultural factors were less highly correlated than student educational aspirations and reading habits, especially weekly use of the school library and a minimum of three hours of personal reading weekly, with writing skills. Among both boys and girls, good reading habits appeared to support mastery of grammar, richness of vocabulary, and the ability to bring forth appropriate examples to support an argument. A concluding chapter draws a profile of the successful student based on these findings. A substantial bibliography is included. Appended materials include a grading scale for writing, the questionnaire, and data compilations. (MSE)
