contents Texas Public Library Summary for 1993. Library Circulation Library Expenditures Library Funding Library Services Library Statistics Public Libraries Reference Services Tables (Data) Users (Information) This volume is the first annual Texas Public Library Summary Statistics. It contains information as submitted by local public libraries on their 1993 Annual Report forms. The contents include: analytical tables; population served by Texas public libraries; number of Texas public libraries; how Texas compares per capita; percentage of expenditures; percentage of income by source; operating income per capita; income and percent of population served by type of establishment; direct expenditures per capita; collection expenditures per capita; circulation per capita; reference transactions per capita; and rank order of Texas public libraries by population served. Results show that Texas public libraries continued a slow improvement during 1993. Total operating expenditures increased 5.7% from 1992 to 1993, compared to only 2.4% between 1991 and 1992. Spending on salaries increased 4.7% and 113 more employees were added during 1993, 34 (30%) of them ALA-MLS (American Library Association-Masters in Library Science) librarians. Use of library services increased as well. But there is still much work to be done. Well over one million Texans continue to be without any public library service. Texas lags behind the nation in expenditures for libraries and in library usage. Compared to the $18.73 per capita spent on public libraries, Texas spends only $10.96, or 58% of the national average. Circulation and visits per capita also trail national averages and only in reference transactions is Texas consistent with performance in other states. (MAS)
