And Others Classification Coding Cost Effectiveness Evaluation Methods Information Services Library Services Models Users (Information) This manual was written as part of a study entitled "Studying the Cost and Value of Library Services," conducted from fall 1993 through spring 1995. The goal of the study was to address the problem of developing models and methods for studying the cost and value of library and information services in a way that can be pragmatically generalized and applied by services wishing to conduct similar studies; to provide libraries with information that will aid in the justification, evaluation, and decision making concerning library services. A brief account of the development process and the structure of the taxonomy is provided here. The objective is to provide detailed explanation with examples for every code in the taxonomy, so that this information may aid in: future encoding of user responses to questions related to value; evaluations of library and information service where user interviews are a part of evaluation; or in modification of the taxonomy. In the process, the manual provides pragmatic rationale for decisions in applications of the taxonomy, and reveals the details of the research's rationale in development and testing of the derived taxonomy. The manual is organized into two parts. Part 1 is intended as a general framework: it contains a summary of the approach to development of the taxonomy, describes its structure and attributes, presents the taxonomy in two exhibits, and elaborates on the nature of major classes and subclasses. Part 2 is the main and "working" part of the manual. For each of the 90 specific categories it provides a rule about encoding and gives examples from users in research interviews. Also provided are general rules for encoding, and a concluding section. (MAS)
