Endowment Funds Fund Raising Library Administration Library Development Library Funding Library Policy Library Surveys Philanthropic Foundations Private Sector Questionnaires Urban Areas This survey documents activities of Urban Libraries Council member libraries in the areas of fund raising and financial development, and gathers examples of library bylaws, policies on the use of private and general funds money, and policies on gifts. Questionnaires were sent to 89 member libraries in September 1993, and 63 were returned. Findings indicate that 59 percent of the responding libraries have endowments, 44 percent have foundations, 92 percent have Friends groups, and 75 percent are actively engaged in raising funds from the private sector. The fund raising is done by 85 percent of the library directors, 47 percent of the boards of trustees, 45 percent of the foundation boards, and 75 percent of the Friends groups. A list of library foundation contacts and Friends of the Library contacts is provided and the completed surveys of responding libraries are included. Appendices contain selected libraries' foundation bylaws, policies on use of private funds and general funds, and policies on gifts. (AEF)
