This book aims to help public and school library professionals to develop competence in selecting quality nonfiction materials of reference value for young American Indian readers and for all young people interested in American Indian subjects. Part 1 discusses the following: (1) the librarian's responsibility to select accurate and culturally relevant materials on ethnic groups especially the American Indian; (2) understanding the evaluation criteria for material selection (authorship, recommendation by Indians, support for Indian values and student self-esteem, and authentic and objective treatment of American Indian life); (3) use of an evaluative checklist for American Indian materials of reference value as a selection tool; (4) publishing American Indian books; and (5) incorporating American Indian resource materials into the curriculum. Part 1 contains 96 references and a list of 46 selected American Indian bibliographies. Part 2 is an annotated bibliography of selected American Indian books of reference value for school-age children. The 239 entries are listed alphabetically by author within the major Dewey Decimal classification areas. Each entry contains author, title, publisher, pages, reading level, subject descriptors, and annotation. Appendix contains publishers' addresses. This book includes an author/title index and a subject index to annotations. (SV)
