At great personal expense, Peabody established the Peabody Education Fund as the first multi-million dollar foundation with the expressed purpose of providing funds to revive public education and teacher education in the South. Peabody was the founder of educational philanthropy in the United States, at a time before tax laws favored charitable giving. The extensive bibliography contains sections dealing with George Peabody: (1) manuscripts, dissertations, and theses; and (2) books, pamphlets, government documents and serials. (EH)
