The book's four main parts parallel the stages educators progress through when incorporating the Internet into the instructional process. Part 1, "Developing Visions, Creating Infrastructures," opens with an overview of what the Internet offers learners and its possibilities for opening minds and expanding horizons. This is followed by three plans for creating infrastructures for accessing and using the Internet. These include funding, staffing, and hardware components. Part 2, "Building Models," looks at the Internet as one part of the total educational technology picture. This section features five "success stories" that describe how individual schools and school districts advanced from a desire to use the Internet to actually applying it, by training faculty and students and involving it in classroom instruction. Part 3, "Integrating the Internet with Curriculum," describes projects at four schools that involve incorporating Internet skills into the curriculum. Part 4, "Publishing on the Web," examines both the technical and educational aspects of World Wide Web publishing in schools. The Postscript, "Learning with the Internet: Prospects for Tomorrow," discusses the educational environment, computer literacy, and virtual communities as crucial interrelated elements of an increasingly technologically-driven world. In addition, appendices include a list of the Internet sites referenced in the book, a list of additional educational Internet sites, and a bibliography. (Author/AEF) |
