Emphasizing tested programs and practices that work, the manual calls for rethinking even the most basic library structures and icons, reinventing an instruction vocabulary, and trying to anticipate the change and development of the role of libraries in the future. The book focuses on practical techniques and is divided into three sections. Part 1 begins with a discussion of what the "new library" is, when and why it developed, and who the new librarians and new library users are. Part 2, the how, is a step-by-step guide to putting together a teaching program, including basic designs for a program, how to set the stage for success, which types of instruction are right, how to become a teacher and teach others to teach, and how to develop and maintain a program. Part 3 examines the settings in which the new library is being taught: at the reference desk, in electronic arcades, in physical classrooms, by proxy via satellite, and over global networks.
