Data Analysis Dewey Decimal Classification Library Catalogs Library Collections Library Materials Online Catalogs Public Libraries Sciences Statistical Analysis Tables (Data) Technology An analysis of the science and technology collections at Carnegie Public Library of East Liverpool, Ohio was undertaken to obtain more thorough knowledge of these areas of the collection before collection development prioritization was made. The entire shelflist from Dewey classification number 500 through 629 was reviewed using the automated public access catalog, and data sheets were kept to record, for each title, class number, intellectual level (adult, young adult, or children's), whether the title was circulating or part of the reference collection, and a categorization into one of six date ranges for the age of the material. The data was input for analysis by SAS and frequency tables were printed based on the subject areas and the other variables recorded. The data reveals that for the survey sample as a whole, the subject areas of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and botany show noticeably fewer titles, while chemistry has the highest percentage of old materials. The data also provides a comparative overview of the subject areas and material age in relation to the adult, young adult, and children's collections, as well as to the circulating and reference collections. The conclusion is that although none of the data can be interpreted as absolute values for the strengths and weaknesses of the science and technology collections, the study provides a basis for determining key areas for improvement, as well as a foundation for conducting further qualitative assessment.
