  • A Fourth-Grade Math Lesson with Dwight Cooley. School Development Library. [Multimedia.] Cooperative Learning Educational Strategies Evaluation Grade 4 Intermediate Grades Learning Activities Mathematics Instruction Problem Solving Teaching Guides Teaching Methods Items in the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory's (NCREL) School Development Library series are multimedia packages consisting of print, video, and CD-ROM resources designed to support educators in their efforts to improve classroom instruction. This particular set consists of a 40-minute video and a printed booklet focusing on Dwight Cooley, a fourth-grade teacher. The video of his classroom shows him teaching a math lesson based on authentic tasks and collaborative learning. Dwight places an emphasis on the problem-solving process, thus students are obliged to explain their strategies in both large and small groups. It is actual footage of a fourth-grade classroom and is divided into 18 events, each division representing a change in the activities or flow of the classroom. The text of the booklet is based on spoken comments made by various people as they watched the video. The booklet's intent is not to be a verbatim transcript, but rather to capture the viewer's reactions to the classroom. (JRH)
