Chapters in the book are: (1) "The First American Authors"; (2) "The Oral Tradition"; (3) "Early Writers"; (4) "Indian Writers 1900-1967"; and (5) "Literary Explosion: 1968 to the Present." A picture essay illustrates the painting tradition of Native Americans. A glossary of relevant terms and a chronology are also included. (NKA)
