This program employs minority students and trains them to work at the Reference Desk answering basic reference questions and utilizing as well as demonstrating the various technological resources in the library. Additionally, the Peer Reference Counselors are able to further develop their own research, interpersonal, and communication skills, along with their understanding of information technology. The program addresses the following objectives: (1) the University's goal related to student retention and cultural diversity; (2) enhancing the atmosphere of the library for minority students; and (3) providing adequate reference desk coverage. The training manual is divided in two parts: the policy manual and the training manual. The policy manual contains general information and procedures, including hiring and scheduling, training, attendance, meals and breaks, school breaks, Reference Desk policies, and problem and conflict resolution. The training manual section contains maps for the physical layout of the library and satellite locations, and guides to using DRAGON--the online catalog, GALILEO (Georgia Library Learning Online), ERL Subject Indices--online and CD-ROM databases, and government documents.
