Henchy, Judith Archives Cataloging Foreign Countries Information Sources Library History Library Materials Preservation Reference Materials Research Libraries Training This report, based on visits to Vietnamese libraries and archives between 1987 and 1997, examines the largely unexplored corpus of Vietnamese textual resources in research institutions and libraries there and elsewhere, the associated problems of bibliographic control, and issues of preservation. The following topics are addressed: the history of collections, including decentralized control in the colonial period, dislocation, and contestation and destruction of records; bibliographic control and the Vietnam Union Catalog Project; and preservation, including the physical condition of repositories in Vietnam, conservation imperatives, preservation microfilming activities, and international cooperation. Conclusions and recommendations focus on training, national preservation planning, reformatting, conservation, book production techniques, and legal requirements. A list of Vietnamese institutions and glossary are appended. (AEF)
