Criteria for selection include usefulness for curricular applications by elementary and secondary students and teachers, interest for students, readability, clarity of appearance and text, and accuracy and currency of information. A total of 1,672 entries are organized in the following categories: (1) collection management tools; (2) reference; (3) social sciences, including anthropology, biography, business/economics, careers, consumer information, current social issues, education, ethnic minorities, etiquette, genealogy/personal names, geography/world studies, handicapped, history, hobbies/games, holidays/special days, law, library science, military science, occult/unexplained phenomena, political science, psychology, sociology, sports, statistics, and women's studies; (4) humanities, including literature for children and young adults, communication, decorative arts, film study, fine arts, language, literature, music, mythology/folklore, philosophy, quotations, religion, and theater/dance; and (5) science and technology, including astronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, computers/electronics, earth sciences, food/nutrition, health/family, mathematics, natural resource/environmental sciences, pets, physics, science/technology in general, transportation, and zoology. Each entry provides complete bibliographic data, a grade level code, an annotation, and citations to reviews. All titles cited are recommended, and those of exceptional merit are noted. Author/title and subject indexes are included. (DLS)
