  • Project C.A.P.A.B.L.E. Computer Assistance Project for Adult Basic and Literacy Education. Final Report. July 1, 1997-June 30, 1998. Adult Basic Education Adult Literacy Computer Literacy Computer Uses in Education Library Services Literacy Education Outcomes of Education Program Effectiveness Tutoring Volunteer Training A project was conducted to add computer-assisted instruction to a one-to-one adult literacy program conducted in public libraries in Bradford and Wyoming Counties of Pennsylvania. During the project, software was selected for literacy instruction in reading, mathematics, grammar, spelling, and English as a second language. Laubach Way to Reading software was installed on public access computers at 10 public libraries. Basic computer training was given to 26 volunteer tutors, and, following training and tutoring sessions, eight adult learners and their tutors were surveyed about their experiences using the computers. As a result of the project, the literacy program now includes a section on computers in its preservice tutor training workshop; eight tutors were trained; eight adult literacy students were introduced to computers, and four students purchased their own computers; and the literacy program made educational software available to adult literacy students and tutors at 10 public libraries in two rural counties. (Appendixes include project documents: correspondence, training agenda, handouts, tutor surveys, and student surveys.) (KC)
