The philosophy of her science department is "more is less," which means that the most important concepts are identified and taught in greater depth. Science is taught using a constructivist approach that allows students to construct their own knowledge. In this videotape, Ms. Neureither demonstrates her philosophy and instructional approach by posing the question "Does yeast make pizza dough rise?" She begins the lesson with a review of data the students have gathered. The students formulate a hypothesis, then generate ideas on how they could design experiments to test their hypothesis. After brief discussions, the students break into groups to design and carry out their experiments. The class ends with Ms. Neureither again bringing the class together to share their observations and results. (AA)
