  • A First-Grade Math Lesson with Sue Gehn. School Development Library [Videotape]. Elementary School Mathematics Faculty Development Grade 1 Lesson Plans Mathematics Activities Mathematics Instruction Primary Education Teaching Methods Videotape Recordings Sue Gehn teaches first grade at Cottage Grove Elementary School in Cottage Grove, just outside of Madison, Wisconsin. She achieves excellence in mathematics by applying the concepts of Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI).The CGI approach is a philosophy founded on the notion that teachers must assess, and understand, the present knowledge that students have in order to make effective instructional decisions. In this videotape, Ms. Gehn puts into action the Cognitively Guided Instructional approach to learning math. She provides her students with a real-world addition problem to solve. Students are allowed ample time to devise a way to represent and solve the problem. They are very creative in their solution strategies. After the students complete the problem, they share their problem representation and solution strategy with the rest of the class. Next, Ms. Gehn has the students solve a sophisticated multiplication problem. The same instructional sequence is repeated as the students represent the problem, solve it, and share their strategies.
