After an introduction, chapters are: (1) The History, the Strife, and the Charge for Change ( discussing such topics as should phonics and spelling be taught in school, study and foibles of the English language, phonemic and morphemic awareness, etc.) ; (2) Teaching Phonics; (3) Teaching Spelling; and (4) Word Study, or Teaching Word Making. Contains 33 references; appendixes contain: a 100-item list of children's literature for use in teaching phonics, spelling, and word study (approximately 100 citations); checklists of behavioral characteristics indicative of reading, writing, or speaking problems; and game and activity formats for spelling, phonics, and word study.
