Elementary Secondary Education Employment Qualifications Graduate Surveys Higher Education Job Performance Job Skills Librarians Library Education Media Specialists Occupational Information Occupational Surveys Questionnaires School Libraries Tables (Data) This study examined whether or not selected recently endorsed and currently practicing school library media specialists are using job competencies taught to them in three schools of higher education training programs. Based on a review of literature, the research hypothesis is that there is a disparity between job competencies as taught and the job competencies as required by selected school library media graduates in their jobs. A survey instrument was developed and distributed to graduates of three library science programs at large urban universities. Results of the study indicated that the responding library media specialists show similar assessment of competencies taught to them or stressed in their library science programs regardless of length of time served in their present positions, years since graduation, or amount of equipment. Competencies used on the job, however, are perceived as needed "often" or "to a great extent" more frequently among respondents who have been out of the university program and in their positions longer than among those more recently graduated and employed. Several responses indicated further need for training at the university level in the areas of public relations, planning and teaching library skills, and practical daily management and organization.
