- Beyond Re-Engineering: Developing Sustainable Success. McNicol, Annette Academic Libraries Foreign Countries Higher Education Institutional Advancement Library Development Library Planning Library Technical Processes Organizational Development Vendors This paper describes experiences in re-engineering and re-designing Technical Services of the library at the Nathan campus of Griffith University in Brisbane, Queensland (Australia). The goal of the project, which was overseen by an outside consultant, was to have a 50% improvement in productivity (which would mean that 50% of the staff currently working in the section would not be employed within the unit upon implementation of the plan). A key ingredient in the redesign was to select a single supplier who could service the majority of the library's needs and with whom the library could develop a long-term partnership arrangement. The next objective was to change the "culture" of the organization to become a place where excellence was celebrated, where people were actively and enthusiastically involved and took responsibility for their own work and were committed to continuous improvement. The section was re-organized into two teams--serials and monographs. Team leaders were appointed, although the ultimate goal was for teams to become self-managed. Since the initial re-engineering, the section has been able to contain unit costs, despite significant salary increases, to undertake projects to improve the integrity of the database and to develop innovative solutions for delivery of information to clients.
