It reflects significant electronic developments that have taken place with regard to the Library of Congress Classification since the last edition. Chapter 1 contains an introduction to the Library of Congress Classification and a brief history of its development. Chapters 2 to 4 set forth aspects and elements that are common throughout the scheme, discussing, respectively: general principles, structure and format; notation; and use of tables. Chapter 5, on assigning Library of Congress call numbers in general, is a chapter new to the book. Chapters 6 and 7 continue the discussion of application with emphasis on individual classes and specific types of library materials. Examples used throughout the book have been taken from the Library of Congress Machine-Readable Cataloging (LC MARC) records, most of which date from 1995 or later. The bibliography lists selected books and articles on the Library of Congress Classification. Appendixes contain tables that are used throughout the system and models for subarrangement of divisions and topics within disciplines. Includes an index. (AEF) |
