Brown, Gavin Elementary School Students Foreign Countries Information Literacy Information Seeking Information Skills Intermediate Grades Junior High School Students Junior High Schools Research Skills Standardized Tests The results of the standardization conducted for the New Zealand Council for Educational Research of 6 new Information Skills tests on 5,400 students in years 5 through 8 are presented. The paper and pencil tests are based on an information literacy perspective from the New Zealand Framework Essential Skills. The tests focus on a formative exploration of students' understanding of the information skills involved in using library-related resources: library catalogues, parts of a book, and reference sources. Girls, students in higher decile schools, and students in higher year levels outperformed their counterparts, although interaction of year level and gender was evident. Through a content analysis, formative uses of the tests have been made possible. The strengths and weaknesses of students at primary and intermediate levels are identified for each test. There is strong evidence from all six tests that students are experiencing difficulty with sorting through the various dimensions of a search task in order to select an appropriate category, as was identified in the 1990 research of M.
