Leazer, Greg Lynch, Beverly Abler, Susan Mediavilla, Cynthia Committees Doctoral Programs Educational Practices Graduate Students Higher Education Information Science Library Education Library Science This document summarizes the activities of the University of California, Los Angeles's (UCLA's) Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) Doctoral Program Committee, 1996-97. These activities are organized into two main areas: Operations and Students. Doctoral Program Committee (DPC) operations outlined include: preparing major policy documents; drafting and submitting a proposal to the U.S. Department of Education for continuation of three doctoral fellowships in LIS; completing updates for the three area reading lists used by students to help prepare for the written qualifying examinations; summarizing the results of the 1995-96 curriculum review; preparing a proposal to the Graduate Division for changes to the Ph.D. program; and purchasing and installing new computer workstations and research software. The document then focuses on DLIS doctoral students and discusses: admissions and recruitment efforts; qualifying exams; dissertation defense; and financial awards. Selected DLIS Ph.D. student accomplishments and the 1997-98 Annual Report are appended. (AEF)
