contents Managing Printing Services. SPEC Kit 254. Blixrud, Julia C., Comp. Academic Libraries Computer Printers Higher Education Library Equipment Library Policy Library Services Library Surveys Printing Research Libraries This SPEC (Systems and Procedures Exchange Center) Kit reports results of a survey that examined how Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members currently provide printing services to their users and how the costs of those services are covered. Of the 122 members surveyed, 62 responded. Included in the responses was information on main, law, medical, and branch or other campus libraries, representing Canadian, national, U.S. private, and U.S. state research libraries. Of those responding to the survey, only one library indicated it did not provide printing capabilities for all or some of the public computer workstations. Results are provided on policies, printing volume, technical capabilities and staff support, costs and cost recovery, formal evaluation, and issues and trends. Represented documents from selected responding libraries, presented after the survey form, include: library printing policies (Indiana University, University of Maryland, Northwestern University); online user instructions (University of Chicago, Georgetown University, University of Guelph, Northwestern University, University of Pittsburgh, Yale University); printed user instructions (University of Minnesota, New York University, University of Waterloo, University of Western Ontario, York University); computer center printing policy (Auburn University, Georgetown University, University of Guelph, Indiana University, Northwestern University, University of Pittsburgh, Yale University); and evaluation (University of Chicago, University of Guelph, Vanderbilt University).
